Structured cabling solutions are extremely cost effective. This is simply because you only install one type of cable rather than application specific cables. Generally speaking Cat5 is the most common installation type. Cat5 is a copper based twisted pair cable of which there are two types. UTP and SDP (Unshielded and Shielded Twisted Pair). Using Cat5e you will achieve network speeds of 155mbps.

If you need to achieve Gigabit performance on your computer network you will need a Cat6 installation. The price increase in cabling terms is relatively small with the greatest price increase coming when the data hardware itself is bought. Please note that normal 100mbps kit can be used perfectly well on a Cat6 network.

Fibre Optics are generally used in conjunction with copper solutions such as Cat5 and Cat6 to form network links. For example, a link between two adjacent buildings 500 metres apart. Fibre optics offer far greater range, and as there is no copper medium involved are the safest employed solution when linking two buildings on different power phases.
